John, our friends at the Climate Forests Campaign brought this urgent issue to our attention, and we wanted to be sure to share it with you:
Mature and old-growth forests on federal lands are essential for capturing carbon and fighting pollution — but right now, 370,000 acres of them are slated to be logged. If enough people speak up, these forests could be permanently protected from logging by the Bureau of Land Management.
Here’s where you come in: the Bureau of Land Management is taking public comments on a proposed rulemaking process that could finally protect our mature and old-growth forests — but only until June 20th.
John, older forests and trees are crucial for addressing the climate crisis.
These trees store the vast majority of the above-ground carbon in a forest. In addition, older forests and trees are far more adaptable to the impacts of climate change, especially compared to industrial tree plantations.
Hundreds of millions of acres of land are controlled by the federal government. Fostering ecosystem resilience and climate resilience on that land is an essential step in tackling the climate crisis — and protecting these old forests must be a top priority for the Bureau of Land Management.
The good news is — after a nearly 50-year fight — the Biden administration recently launched a rulemaking process that has the potential to protect up to 112 million acres of mature and old-growth trees and forests on federal lands from logging, but it will only become reality if enough of us submit public comments to defend these forests.
Right now, climate advocates like us have a once-in-a-generation opportunity to call for permanent protections for federal mature and old-growth forests from logging.
We need to work together and be LOUDER than the logging industry to ensure these trees and forests are safeguarded for future generations, not sold and cut for profit:
