This week, the Republican Study Committee released the preferred budget of three-fourths of Republicans in the House. That budget would slash Social Security benefits and destroy Medicare. But Republicans know that they can’t enact their shameful agenda on their own―that’s why Kevin McCarthy is plotting a closed-door commission to fast-track cuts to Social Security and Medicare.

The American people demand that any changes to Social Security or Medicare happen in the sunlight.

Republicans deny their fixation on cutting Social Security and Medicare by saying that they never introduce bills to cut benefits.

But while Democrats have introduced legislation like the Social Security Expansion Act, which secures Social Security’s financing over the long term and increases benefits by making the wealthy pay their fair share, Republicans have focused on ways to bring normal legislative processes behind closed doors, so that the public won’t know who to blame.
