Dear John,

This week I had a clear message for my colleagues in Congress: standing up to the CCP is not racist. I also wrote an editorial with Rep. Randy Feenstra (R-IA) about our bill to provide working families with a permanent tax cut, introduced legislation to support our students as so many of them continue to struggle with mental health in the wake of the pandemic, and got to spend time with veterans, active service members, and lots of our AAPI neighbors.

Get the details about all of this and more below, and make sure to follow my FacebookInstagram, and Twitter to get these updates in real-time.

You Deserve a Permanent Tax Cut

Image

Last week, Rep. Randy Feenstra and I wrote an editorial for The Hill about our bill, the Permanent Tax Cuts for American Families Act.

Every year, filing taxes is both frustrating and confusing for millions of Americans. Not only is the process time-consuming and complex, but also discouraging as taxpayers see a large percentage of their earnings disappear into the depths of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).

As a matter of both principle and policy, American families deserve to keep as much of their hard-earned paycheck as possible. Families — not federal bureaucrats or IRS agents — know best how to save, spend, and allocate their money, especially during times of economic hardship. This is particularly true as record-high inflation erodes family budgets and Washington, D.C. takes an ever-growing chunk out of every paycheck. As long-time advocates for commonsense tax reform, we are committed to prioritizing the best interests of hardworking taxpayers — always.

Over the weekend, we celebrated Philippines Independence Day. I loved stopping by the Pista Sa Nayon festivities in Fullerton. It's always so wonderful to see so many smiles!

Kicking Off the Congressional App Challenge

Image

Registration for the 2023 Congressional App Challenge (CAC) is now open! The CAC is a great way for middle and high school students from across the country to explore and improve their computer-based skills by creating original apps.

This competition encourages computer science and innovation skills and offers an opportunity for students to explore potential careers in the STEM field. The competition is hosted by the Congressional Internet Caucus.

Each winning app may be put on display in the U.S. Capitol Building for one year and will be featured on the House of Representatives website. Winning students are also invited to the #HouseofCode Capitol Hill Reception in Washington D.C.

WATCH: "Standing Up to the CCP is not Racist"

Some of my colleagues have characterized the Build it in America Act as racist or xenophobic. As an Asian American who proudly immigrated to this country, I want to be clear. Standing up to the CCP is not xenophobia, and claiming this legislation is racist is dangerous & false.

Supporting Student Mental Health

Image

Our young people are growing up in the midst of a new mental health challenge. That's why I joined Nikki Budzinski (D-IL) to introduce the Trauma Support and Mental Health in Schools Reauthorization Act, bipartisan legislation to link schools with evidence-based trauma support and mental health care services, improving access for students.

This legislation is a commonsense, bipartisan solution to ensuring our children and communities have the support they need. By connecting schools, families, and students to critical resources, this legislation can make a real difference in countless lives for years to come.

There is no better flag to wave than the one that represents the greatest country in the world. I was so glad to join American Legion Post 295 in Cypress for a flag day ceremony to honor our beautiful flag.
