Southern Mexico Encuentro
"The heart of Quixote Center programming is to develop and support community-based economic development (jobs!) so that folks have legal and safe options to support themselves and to thrive in their home communities and countries. Sadly, it's too late for that for the 110 million people worldwide who have fled their home communities as a result of violence, climate change, and poverty.
"We encountered a few of the 110 million last week, during Quixote Center's solidarity trip to southern Mexico and Guatemala. For context, the vast majority of migrants are either internally displaced, meaning they displace to camps in their own country, or they displace to the country next door, such as Syrians to Turkey, Venezuelans to Colombia, and Nicaraguans to Costa Rica. Only a tiny fraction has the resources and the stamina to try to get to the United States. Most of them never make it, because the journey is dangerous, and even if they survive it the US is not likely to let them in. "

Quixote Center Statement on New U.S-Caribbean Initiatives
"Vice President Kamala Harris met with Caribbean leaders last week and announced measures ([link removed]) to address the security and humanitarian crises in Haiti.
"We celebrate the Biden administration's new efforts to combat illegal arms trafficking in the Caribbean. Illicit gun sales are a major driver of violence, allowing gangs to consolidate their power, surpass the authorities and operate with total impunity. We applaud the long-overdue implementation of the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, a concrete step to curtailing the gangs' influence.
"The U.S. also announced $53.7 million in additional funding to USAID to be directed to Haiti, without providing details about how USAID will use the funds. We hope that this will provide immediate relief to hunger; however, $53.7 million is not enough to address Haiti's real crisis: most people cannot earn enough to survive and have no options for doing so in the future."

Take Action for Peace in Haiti
Violence in Haiti is ramping up, and tragically 600 people died in Haiti in April alone. A bipartisan effort, the Haiti Criminal Collusion Transparency Act seeks to impose individual sanctions on those responsible for the violence: gang leaders and the political and economic elites who support them. Use this form ([link removed]) to urge your Senators to support the bill!
If your Senator is one of the co-sponsors listed HERE ([link removed]), we ask that you instead send a thank-you message.

Artist Corner
Felix D'eon
This week, in honor of Pride Month, we are featuring gay Mexican artist Felix D'eon, who is based in Mexico City. His illustrations and vignettes often depict love in the LGBTQ+ community, often in a historical or mythical context. He also created a LGBTQ+ LoterĂa set, a traditional Mexican card game similar to bingo, but each numbered card features an iconic illustration. D'eon's set draws inspiration from the original cards to celebrate iconography such as the Pride flag, or a couple observing the moon together.
