Weekend Reading
Dear John,
No one should ever have to go hungry—especially in a wealthy nation. Unfortunately, far too many of our neighbors struggle to put food on the table. Yet the U.S. relies on industrial agriculture, which is a huge contributor to greenhouse gas emissions.
This year’s Farm Bill is an opportunity to change course. AFSC is joining with Daily Kos and partners to urge Congress to pass a Farm Bill that works for people and the planet. Sign our petition today! [link removed]
Here are this week's picks to inform and support your activism:
Update: Helping elders harmed by airstrikes in Gaza: [link removed] In April of this year, AFSC supporters donated to provide wheelchairs, walkers, and other essential items for elders in Gaza. These supplies are critical, especially for elders affected by Israel’s latest airstrikes on Gaza. Watch this video to hear from one family who lost their home and how AFSC is making a difference.
On Juneteenth, we must honor the unfinished work of abolition: [link removed] On June 19, 1865, the news finally reached Galveston, Texas that slavery had been abolished. That was more than two years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. Today, AFSC joins communities across the country in celebrating and recommitting to our work for a world without prisons or cages—the living legacies of slavery.
What it means to be a refugee in Gaza: [link removed] June 20 is World Refugee Day. AFSC’s Serena Awad shares her experience living under Israeli military blockade in Gaza, how young Palestinians are resisting, and what gives her hope today.
War Stories/Peace Stories: [link removed] We’ve been thrilled to share public polling with you that shows high levels of support for peacebuilding and diplomacy. AFSC’s Director of Research and Analytics, Beth Hallowell, recently sat down with Jamil Simon of War Stories/Peace Stories. They discussed what that research means for anyone interested in building a more peaceful world.
Register for our next “Light in Gaza” webinar, A Rose Shoulders Up: Poetry and Culture in Gaza (June 27, 12 p.m. ET/ 9 a.m. PT): [link removed] Professor and Middle East expert Ann Lesch will talk with “Light in Gaza” contributor Mosab Abu Toha about his life and work in Gaza. Mosab is a poet, essayist, short story writer, and the founder of the Edward Said Library in Gaza.
Matching Gift Challenge: [link removed] Donate to AFSC’s Refugee Response Fund and help bring humanitarian relief and other support to people escaping war, persecution, and disasters. Your gift will be matched up to $100,000 through June 30. Thank you to all who have given generously so far—your gift makes a difference!
Special thanks to our monthly donors, our Partners for Peace, for their ongoing support to make all our work possible.
