Reining in the Federal Government

Friend,

The Executive Branch has the ability to make rules and regulations that impact all of us. The federal government has implemented hundreds of rules and regulations over the past few decades. I'm concerned about the overreach of this rulemaking process. Whether it is Congress spending far beyond our means, or the Executive Branch issuing new rules and regulations that cost taxpayer dollars and impact our economy. We need more transparency and accountability in Washington.

This week, the House passed legislation that will bring a much-needed check to the Executive Branch. Legislation called the REINS Act, passed the House. This bill would simply require government agencies to get Congressional approval before they can implement a new rule that would have an economic impact of $100 million or more. This is a common-sense proposal to bring much needed accountability in Washington and put a much-needed check on federal power no matter what party is in control of the White House.

Rules implemented by the Executive Branch can be wide-ranging. Most recently, we have seen changes made in our ability to produce energy, or how our farmers can operate.

A more well-known example would be the Biden Administration's plans to address student loan debt. Last August, the Department of Education announced a plan to suspend thousands of dollars in student loan debt. This proposal came from the Executive Branch and is estimated that it would cost taxpayers roughly $400 billion. This is an example of the Executive Branch attempting to implement a policy without going to Congress.

There are other examples from previous Administrations and both parties. We have seen this practice in Washington for far too long and all we are asking for is to allow Congress to consider major changes like these before they are implemented. I'm hopeful that this legislation can move through Congress to provide a much-needed check on Washington's spending.
