John, with Father's Day right around the corner, I joined the folks at Good Morning America today to talk about something incredibly personal for me: Parental leave.
I never knew my dad, and long before Aly and I decided to have kids, I knew I was going to be as involved as I possibly could from day one. That meant being there for every doctor's appointment, putting together the nursery and shopping for baby clothes, and surprisingly, it also meant becoming the first member of Congress to take paternity leave once our son was born.
(And doing a lot of newborn laundry.)

At the time, it wasn't an issue that got talked about a lot – it's still not talked about enough. But those first days with your child are hard and so incredibly important for you as a new parent, for your baby, and for your partner who shouldn't be left to handle everything on their own.
Every American family deserves this opportunity to bond and take care of each other without worrying about finances or that they could lose their job.
