It’s an honor to serve you in the U.S. House of Representatives. On day one, I promised to represent you with transparency, authenticity, and integrity, and I’m committed to upholding that promise. Every week, I’ll be sending “Lori’s Letter” to keep you updated on my work. If you know someone who would like to receive my regular updates, please have them visit this link to sign up today! Continue reading this week’s letter to learn more about my votes to restore separation of powers in Washington, hold the HHS secretary accountable, and more. | VOTING FOR THE REINS ACT, SEPARATION OF POWERS RESTORATION ACT This week, I voted in favor of two bills that seek to restore checks and balances and separation of powers – two critical principles that ensure the federal government remains fair and accountable to the American people. The REINS Act will prevent overreach by unelected federal bureaucrats by requiring congressional approval of any new and major regulations. Additionally, the Separation of Powers Act would prevent the executive branch from straying too far from congressional intent. Oregonians sent me to Congress to hold the Biden administration accountable and push back against federal overreach when necessary, and that’s why I was proud to support these two bills, which will put power back in the hands of the people through their elected representatives. Learn more about these bills here: | PRESSING HHS SECRETARY ON THE ADMINISTRATION’S FAILURE TO PROTECT MIGRANT CHILDREN During an Education and the Workforce Committee hearing this week, I questioned Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS) Xavier Becerra on the department’s failure to adequately vet sponsors for migrant children arriving in the United States. My questions followed a letter I sent requesting more information from the Biden administration on reports that migrant children were being trafficked and forced to work illegally in the U.S. Sadly, HHS' rushed and reckless process caused this exploitation. It was a chilling failure of leadership, and we must ensure it never happens again. I received a commitment from HHS Secretary Becerra to work with Congress and other federal agencies to better protect undocumented children from abuse. Watch our exchange: | BLOCKING THE ADMINISTRATION’S ATTEMPT TO BAN CERTAIN APPLIANCES The Biden administration should not be allowed to decide what type of stove you can use to cook meals for your family. I voted to prevent the administration from enacting new regulations that would effectively ban gas stoves. We discussed workforce and housing issues, drought conditions, and more. Thank you to our participants and to the Sisters Area Chamber of Commerce for hosting! Learn more from KTVZ here. | There’s nothing quite like the Biggest Little Show in the World – after the roundtable, I enjoyed spending time with friends and meeting Oregonians at the Sisters Rodeo! | INTRODUCING THE DREAM AND PROMISE ACT This week, I joined several of my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to introduce the Dream and Promise Act. Oregon is home to thousands of Dreamers, and a vast majority of them have been in America for well over 10 years. During that time, they have made significant contributions to our society and our economy. In fact, the majority of them are working in industries that are currently struggling to fill job openings. We are a compassionate nation, and it’s past time for Congress to provide Dreamers with certainty and fairness. If they meet commonsense requirements provided in this bill, individuals brought to America as young children should be allowed to stay here. Here, they are at home. I’m honored to join my colleagues in support of the bipartisan Dream and Promise Act. | ONE MORE THING! On Wednesday we celebrated Flag Day – a day to remember that the American flag continues to be a powerful symbol of freedom, liberty, and prosperity around the world! | Thank you for reading my weekly newsletter.
