We always love to see when states lead the way in strengthening our democracy! Recently, Michigan, which is home to nearly 200 of our alumni, has become a beacon of hope in the fight to strengthen our democracy [[link removed]] .
In just a few short years, the state has implemented initiatives aimed at building a more inclusive, transparent, and representative democracy. This includes increasing voter registration and turnout and closing the racial gap in voter participation, ending partisan gerrymandering, and promoting citizen-initiated ballot measures to increase direct democracy and enact popular policies. The work that Michigan has done is now a blueprint for other states—a testament to the power of active civic participation and New American leadership at the state and local level.

Yesterday marked the 11th anniversary of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. Despite its initial promise to protect hundreds of thousands of young immigrants from deportation, the future of DACA remains uncertain.
We stand in solidarity with the many DACA recipients who are still living in limbo, including the approximately 93,000 first-time DACA registrants [[link removed]] whose applications haven’t been processed since 2021 because of legal challenges. DACA recipients belong here, and they do amazing things in our society, democracy, and everywhere in between. It’s long past time that we provide them with permanent protections, including a pathway to citizenship.

This month, our friends at the I Stand With Immigrants Initiative launched a report titled, “Moving the Culture, Shaping Our Future: How 10 Years of Cultural Strategy Helped Build and Hold a Pro-Immigrant Majority in America.”
The report looks at a positive narrative shift on immigration over the past 10 years, and argues that the work of organizations and advocates fighting for cultural change is hugely important to securing long-overdue protections for undocumented immigrants and their loved ones. It also serves as a hopeful validator of our collective work to change our culture, and is another vehicle for directly impacted immigrants to share their stories widely.
