Letter from the Mayor

Dear Washingtonians,

Earlier this week, we cut the ribbon on the new Sycamore & Oak retail village in the great Ward 8. This stunning space on the St. Elizabeths East campus is home to 13 businesses—all owned by residents of Wards 7 and 8. The 13 locally owned, Black-owned businesses at Sycamore & Oak include:

* Black Bella Spa & Wellness Center
* Soufside Creative
* Chris Pyrate & Friends
* LoveMore Brand
* Paradyce Clothing Company, Inc.
* Vaya Beauty
* The Museum DC
* WeFitDC
* Dionne’s Good Food
* Glizzy’s
* Tricey’s DC
* Buna Talk Café
* The Fresh Food Factory Market

You can support these local businesses and attend events at Sycamore & Oak [ [link removed] ] throughout the weekend, including the Juneteenth “Conversation and Crank” panel and performances starting at 2:00 p.m. on Monday.

On Monday, we are also hosting two fun, family-friendly Juneteenth events downtown [ [link removed] ] that I invite you to join us at. Come to Franklin Park at 9:00 a.m. for FITDC’s Juneteenth Health and Wellness Fair. Then, join us at Black Lives Matter Plaza at 12:00 p.m. for an activation that will include games, dancing, a kid zone, and musical performances from EU featuring Sugar Bear, Anthony Brown, the Earth, Wind & Fire Tribute Band, The Image Band, and more!

Juneteenth is a day we honor all those who fought and struggled to ensure our freedoms. And in DC, we celebrate our progress while continuing to fight for full access to American democracy through DC statehood.

Sincerely,

Muriel Bowser

Juneteenth
