Presenting Streamwood with Federal Funding I Secured for its New Bike and Pedestrian Trails

Last weekend, I joined with officials from Streamwood, including Village President Billie Roth, and Ride Illinois’s Terry Witt and Bob Wagner to celebrate the $330,400 in federal funding I secured for the construction of a new bike and pedestrian trail, which will better link sections of Streamwood together and promote and encourage more outdoor activity. Interest in biking and walking in the community has increased since the beginning of the pandemic, but cycling or walking on main streets or sidewalks can present dangers. By adding this bike and pedestrian trail along Madison Drive in Streamwood, crashes and fatalities will decrease, making the Streamwood community not only healthier, but safer when biking and walking for exercise or enjoyment.

Reintroducing the Hate Crimes Commission Act

On Thursday, I partnered with Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY), Congresswoman Grace Meng (D-NY) and Congresswoman Nydia Velázquez (D-NY) to reintroduce the Hate Crimes Commission Act. Over the last few years, our nation has endured a disturbing surge in the rate and number of hate-motivated crimes and violence. The Hate Crimes Commission Act will help provide a path forward to combatting this by informing law enforcement’s approach through collecting representative data, identifying community bias prevention strategies, and combating future acts of hate. This commission will be comprised of 12 members appointed by House and Senate leadership, the Attorney General, and the Secretary of Health and Human Services to investigate the observed rise in hate crimes, contributing factors for bias-motivated crime, and actions federal agencies can take to improve data collection on these crimes by local law enforcement entities. Sixty-one of my colleagues have joined our bill as original cosponsors and it has already been endorsed by organizations including the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association (NAPABA), the National Association of Social Workers (NASW), and Equality Illinois.

We will continue to hold additional office hours in Wood Dale on the third Tuesday of each month: July 18th, August 15th, September 19th, October 13th, November 21st, and December 19th.

Our Next Pingree Grove Office Hours: Tuesday, July 11th: 12:00pm – 4:00pm at the Pingree Grove Municipal Center at 555 Reinking Rd, Pingree Grove, IL RSVP HERE

We will continue to hold additional office hours in Pingree Grove on the first Tuesday of each month: August 1st, September 5th, October 3rd, November 7th, and December 5th

Our Next Des Plaines Office Hours: Tuesday, August 15th: 9:30am – 11:30am in the Des Plaines Public Library at 1501 Ellinwood St, Des Plaines, IL RSVP HERE

We will continue to hold additional office hours in Des Plaines on the second Tuesday of every other month: October 10th, and December 12th.
