FATHER'S DAY
My Firstborn Baby Died — & Then It Was Father's Day

It’s Father’s Day this weekend, and for a lot of people, it’s a complicated day. Rob Reider is one of them. He’s the co-founder of Sad Dads Club, a supportive community for dads who’ve lost kids. And today he writes about his first Father’s Day, which came about six months after his firstborn was delivered stillborn: “That morning, I slowly awoke from a vivid dream. I felt groggy, confused — like both my mind and body were stuck in a half-conscious state, somewhere between dreaming and reality. I knew, somehow, that I was slowly waking up, and that at any moment, I’d be fully conscious. Suddenly, dread. Panic. I felt like I was freefalling. My eyes opened. My throat tightened. It was Father’s Day.”

It’s a beautiful and moving piece, and we’re so glad he wrote it for us. And if Sunday is complicated for you, too, whatever your reason, we’re thinking of you.

How To Navigate Your Kid’s Coming Out

“Even in an LGBTQ+-friendly environment, coming out was still scary,” writes Natalie Schriefer today. “I waited until my late twenties not because I didn’t know before that, but because it felt safer to stay in the closet. I’d hoped that the longer I waited the more confident I’d become.” And so she’s got some guidance for straight parents on how to handle the conversation when their kid comes to them with news about their sexuality. Definitely give it a read.
