If the last couple of weeks have shown us anything, it’s that wildfire isn’t just a West Coast issue. The wildfires in Canada are another devastating tragedy that have displaced thousands, destroyed countless acres of land, and impacted communities thousands of miles away.

As commissioner of public lands, I’m committed to keeping families safe and supporting those affected by wildfires. We made Washington a leader in fighting – and preventing – wildfires, made historic new investments in our firefighting arsenal, and reinvented the way we invest in long-term forest health. 

And last week, my team and I at the Department of Natural Resources sent equipment and firefighters to assist our friends in Alberta as they fight these devastating fires.

I’m proud to support our neighbors to the north as part of our NW Compact, an agreement with U.S. states and Canadian provinces to share resources, and I know they'll have our backs if needed. Together, we’re doing our part to defend our lands and protect our communities both here and abroad, because when it comes to climate change and our environment, we’re all connected.

As governor, I plan to continue these vital partnerships and take proactive steps to ensure our public lands are healthy and productive – both for today and for future generations.
