Notes from Mike's Desk from the Week of  June 12 – 16, 2023

Hello, friends! Thank you for subscribing to my weekly newsletter highlighting what’s happening on Capitol Hill and in Louisiana’s 4th Congressional District. I’m always grateful when you recommend this resource to others.

STORM UPDATE

Many of you reading this have likely been affected by the storms that swept through Louisiana this morning, and I want to let you know that my office has been in contact with GOHSEP and is closely monitoring this situation.

First responders are working quickly to clear roads and fix power lines, but please don’t hesitate to reach out to my office if you need help at (202) 225-2777.

The path of destruction is wide. Thousands are without power, and hundreds are facing damage to their homes, including my own family. Stay safe.

IN THE HOUSE

This week, House Republicans voted to protect veterans’ 2nd Amendment rights, block the Biden Administration from banning gas stoves, and rein in the administrative state. I was proud to cosponsor the Save Our Gas Stoves Act, the REINS Act, and the Separation of Powers Restoration Act – all of which passed the House this week. Read about the wins we secured for the American people below, courtesy of my friend and colleague Majority Leader Steve Scalise.

HIGHLIGHT OF THE WEEK

Article 1, Section 1 of the Constitution declares that “all legislative powers herein granted shall be vested in a Congress of the United States.” Through years of dereliction by Congress, the executive branch and federal agencies have expanded aggressively and usurped the authority of the legislative branch as the chief rulemaking body in America. The REINS Act represents an important first step in reclaiming that authority, and I was proud to speak on the floor this week to explain why.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:

On Wednesday, as we celebrated Flag Day, I introduced legislation with Sen. Ted Cruz and Congresswoman Elise Stefanik to require that American flags displayed on federal property be 100% made in the USA. Currently, federal agencies are only required to purchase flags that are 50% manufactured in America, and this bill will correct that mistake and support the small businesses that make our flags.

LAGNIAPPE

For the third year running, Republicans defeated the Democrats in the Congressional baseball game. I was fortunate to have my family in town for the event, and it’s being reported that we broke records this year for both attendance and money raised for local charities. Nothing brings Americans together like our national pastime.

We brought our pup Lincoln to D.C. with us this week, and he thoroughly enjoyed serving as our office mascot, greeting constituents, and lightening the mood of everyone on Capitol Hill. But, as he’s learned, it’s really exhausting work.
