John,
From enticing and manipulating migrants with false promises of employment and housing opportunities to misusing taxpayer funds, and denying migrants their right to due process, Republican governors Greg Abbott of Texas and Ron DeSantis of Florida have committed numerous human rights abuses.
Remember how last September, DeSantis flew dozens of migrants to Martha's Vineyard in Massachusetts, while Abbott bused dozens more to the vice-presidential residence in Washington, D.C?
Well, it’s now widely known that many of the migrants who were flown to Martha's Vineyard by DeSantis were purposely misled about their destination and were not given the opportunity to refuse the trip and those bused to Washington, D.C. by Abbott were not allowed to leave the bus once they arrived in the city.
It’s crystal clear that these actions are a violation of migrants' civil rights and likely amount to human trafficking. These governors must be investigated and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
Migrants must be treated with dignity and respect and the human rights of all people must be upheld, regardless of their immigration status. Demand the Department of Justice investigate Governors Abbott and DeSantis now.
The fact that Abbott and DeSantis used migrants as political pawns isn’t up for debate. In the weeks leading up to the 2022 midterm elections, both governors made a point of highlighting their efforts dehumanizing and demonizing migrants to show how tough they are and that they’ll crack down on illegal immigration no matter what the costs.
In their appeal to conservative voters, these two governors showed how they will spread xenophobia and racism, which in the end, only makes it more difficult to implement humane and effective solutions for immigration.
Upholding human rights, regardless of one's immigration status, is fundamental to maintaining a just and compassionate society. By examining the claims made against DeSantis and Abbott, the Department of Justice can demonstrate its commitment to ensuring the dignity, safety, and well-being of all individuals.
As a nation that prides itself on justice and equality, we have a duty to ensure that such abuses are not tolerated and that those accountable are held responsible. Tell the Department of Justice: Govs. Abbott and DeSantis must be investigated for their human rights abuses against migrants now.
By raising our voices for the voiceless, we will always stand up for justice.
