UE members from Virginia Beach at 2022 Juneteenth march on Washington, DC.
This Monday marks the third year that Juneteenth will be celebrated as a federal holiday, and it will be a paid day off for many UE members whose locals have added it as a new holiday in recent years.
The holiday, which commemorates the end of slavery, will be celebrated across the country with a variety of events over the three-day weekend. UE General President Carl Rosen told the UE NEWS last year, “I encourage all UE members to find a Juneteenth celebration in their community and attend with UE gear and, if appropriate, flags and banners, to demonstrate that our union stands firmly on the side of racial justice.”
Last year, UE members celebrated the holiday by joining a “mass moral assembly” in Washington, DC, where Eastern Region President George Waksmunski and Local 150 Vice President Bryce Carter were among the featured speakers. Many other UE members attended Juneteenth celebrations and educational events that were part of the Labor Notes conference in Chicago.
