Friends -

Every June we celebrate Pride Month to commemorate the sacrifices, resilience, diversity and history of the LGBTQ+ community. I am incredibly grateful to all of the heroes - seen and unseen - who have fought and sacrificed to achieve progress towards equality.

I am consistently blown away and inspired by the tremendous solidarity and support for the LGBTQ+ community that is showcased throughout our communities. I’m also aware of the terrible violence and bigotry that too many still face, a reminder that our fight is far from over.

Together, we will continue to push our communities, state and country forward.

** Legislative LGBTQ Caucus Endorses!

I am proud to announce that the California Legislative LGBTQ Caucus has endorsed my campaign! The LGBTQ Caucus is comprised of 12 members of the State Legislature working to further the goal of equality and justice for all Californians.

I am honored to receive their endorsement and remain committed to being a fierce advocate for creating a more inclusive California for all!


** A lifetime of LGBTQ Advocacy+

When I came out in 2006,I was one of the only four openly gay mayors in the country ([link removed]) . My journey out of the closet was the subject of an episode of Logo network’s internationally syndicated Coming Out Stories. In the subsequent weeks, I received hundreds of letters from people who shared in my struggles. It is the honor of a lifetime to inspire others to come out and to serve as their voice in government.

I am proud to have led from the frontlines throughout my career. I served as the inaugural chair of the national LGBTQ Mayor’s Alliance in 2014. I also headed the LGBTQ Caucuses of the League of California Cities.

My advocacy for LGBTQ+ rights has extended beyond state and local government. A column on gay marriage ([link removed]) I wrote for USA Today with Julian Castro and Stephanie Rawlings-Blake was cited as evidence in cases before the US Supreme Court of changing social norms, helping cement marriage equality in US jurisprudence.

As your Senator, I will be committed to furthering protections for marginalized communities and ensuring that every Californian feels represented and respected.


** Regional Pride Events!

Thousands of neighbors have attended the pride events throughout our Senate District over the last two weeks.

Thank you to everyone who marched in the Sacramento Pride March, ran in Davis Pride 1k/5k, and to those who attended the Vacaville Pride Summer Festival!

We have made tremendous progress towards creating communities where everyone is welcome!
