Dear Partners:
On January 30, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) released its long-rumored guidance on Medicaid block grants. This letter to state Medicaid directors invites states to restructure their Medicaid programs in a radical manner previously rejected by Congress, by capping federal funding at an artificially low level. The administration’s guidance ignores the health care needs of millions, including children, and the state budget constraints of governors. Any state that agrees to this deeply misguided policy is putting state taxpayer dollars and constituents’ lives at risk.
Families USA invites state and national organizations to sign this letter to CMS urging the administration to rescind this guidance that promises flexibility, but will surely lead to catastrophic implications for state budgets, and state Medicaid programs along with the children and families they serve.
