Today was a big day for our legislative priorities. Today at the Texas Capitol Governor Greg Abbott officially signed into law SB 15, the Save Women’s Sports law by Senator Mayes Middleton and Rep. Valoree Swanson, ensuring fairness in competition for college women athletes, and SB 14, the legislation protect children from irreversible puberty blocker treatments and mutilation procedures.
These two bills were highest-of-priority legislation for Texas Values during the 88th Texas Legislature.
SB 15 ensures that athletes compete on sports teams with their sex. Last session, the Texas legislature passed HB 25, the Save Girls' Sports Law, which protects K-12 UIL sports by making sure boys do not compete in girls’ sports. But the work was not finished as seen when NCAA champion and spokesperson Riley Gaines was forced to compete and surrender her trophy to male swimmer Lia "Will" Thomas from the University of Pennsylvania. In 2021, Governor Abbott signed similar Texas Values initiated legislation to protect girls’ sports in Texas public high schools.
Texas women collegiate athletes from various sports joined Governor Abbott at the signing ceremony on Thursday, including collegiate basketball player Kassidy Comer; former collegiate swimmer Jeri Shanteau; former Olympic powerlifter Jade Dickens; collegiate swimmer Ellie McLeod; collegiate volleyball player Makenna Miller; and other women’s sports advocates.
“Sports have inspired many women to cast bold visions and dreams of what they want to achieve,” said Governor Abbott during the signing ceremony. “The legacy of women’s sports will be safeguarded for generations to come. Women in Texas can be assured that the integrity of their sports will be protected in Texas.”
SB 14, another priority bill, protects children from irreversible puberty blocker treatments and mutilation procedures. Under this new law, health care providers could be at risk of losing their licenses if performing a gender transition procedure or treatment. In addition, the bill prohibits public money from being paid or granted to any organization that provides or facilitates transition treatments. SB 14 makes Texas the largest state in the country to protect children from harmful gender procedures and treatments.
Governor Abbott publicly thanked Rep. Tom Oliverson and Senator Donna Campbell, the bill’s authors, for their courage and expertise to bring SB 14 across the finish line for Texas children.
