Ukraine Counteroffensive
Russia is putting up a desperate fight in the face of Ukraine’s counteroffensive, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy told NBC News on Thursday, saying he believes that if the Kremlin loses this battle, it will ultimately lose the war. |
NATO Support
NATO allies and others meeting in Brussels on Thursday vowed to keep up their support for Ukraine indefinitely as Kyiv makes slow progress in its push to take back Russian territory, with a special emphasis on providing air defenses and ammunition and stepping up F-16 fighter jet training, as the NYT reports. |
China Spending Drive
Beijing is planning major steps to revive the country’s flagging economy, including the possibility of billions of dollars in new infrastructure spending, and looser rules to encourage property investors to buy more homes, as the WSJ reports. |

This week marks the 53rd anniversary of the Grateful Dead’s classic album “Workingman’s Dead.” In 1970, Hunter S. Thompson said of the record, “I think ‘Workingmen’s Dead’ is the heaviest thing since ‘Highway 61.” Not at all an understatement. The fourth studio recording by the Dead saw the band changing gears from their trademark psychedelic rock to Jerry Garcia and lyricist Robert Hunter’s sound and vision of Americana. Even the album cover in its understated sepia tone was a departure from psychedelia. Songs like “Uncle John’s Band,” “Dire Wolf,” “New Speedway Boogie” and “Cumberland Blues” with their down home boogie and soaring vocals evoked what Dead bassist Phil Lesh would call “an old, weird America.” But perhaps “Casey Jones” is the album’s most memorable track. |
