In April 2023 the San Francisco Chronicle reported that despite widespread naloxone availability, fentanyl overdose deaths from January to March 2023 hit 200—up over 41% over the same time period in 2022. If overdoses continue at their present rate approximately 800 will die before the end of the year. Nationally the news isn’t much better—and while some states saw improvement—overall fentanyl deaths are up, but at a slower rate of increase. So much for the 2.57% reduction.

Nation Past COVID Emergency, Medicaid Needs to Do the Same

With the expiration of the COVID-19 public health emergency, states are finally able to remove people from Medicaid who are not eligible for the program under the law. Some are taking full advantage.

A recent analysis by the Kaiser Family Foundation found that at least 565,000 patients ([link removed]) in 12 states have been disenrolled from Medicaid. Nearly 250,000 of them ([link removed]) are in Florida. Millions more disenrollments will likely follow, according to federal estimates ([link removed]) .

Congressional legislation would give animal activists enforcement opportunities in checkoff programs

Something about the Opportunities for Fairness in Farming (OFF) Act seems, well, off. The OFF Act ([link removed]) was introduced in Congress back in February with the stated goal of establishing “restrictions and requirements for checkoff programs overseen by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.” However, the restrictions and requirements outlined by the bill already exist in the current checkoff structure.
