Supporter,
In a surprise decision, the Supreme Court ruled this past Thursday that
Alabama lawmakers discriminated against Black Americans by approving a
racially gerrymandered congressional map in violation of the Voting Rights
Act.
The Court’s 5-4 ruling in Allen v. Milligan narrowly upheld long-standing
legal precedent. But it comes as a surprise to many legal experts because
the Court’s right-wing majority has repeatedly ignored precedent while
undermining reproductive and voting rights.
We’ve built a movement that is making it clear that judges must be
fair-minded and uphold the law, or else they’ll be held accountable in the
court of public opinion. In other words, our campaigns are
working. When the public is
paying attention and advocating for equal justice, judges must do their
jobs instead of doing favors for their far-right friends.
Now we have to keep the momentum going. [ [link removed] ]The fight for voting rights –
and for fair courts that uphold those rights – depends on support from
grassroots supporters like you. Please make a gift today to keep up the
fight for Truth,Justice, and the American Way. >>

While we welcome this decision to uphold Black voters’ rights in Alabama,
the truth is that we’re still fighting an uphill battle to Defend the
Black Vote. While the Court avoided doing more harm to voting rights
around racial gerrymandering, the Court’s previous decisions gutting key
provisions of the Voting Rights Act remain in effect and continue to
inflict damage.
We will not allow Americans to be disenfranchised. With your help, our Defend the Black
Vote campaign will build upon the success of our efforts in fighting voter
suppression and working to achieve record Black voter turnout in key
states where these rights are under threat.
To defend equal access to the ballot, we must also keep our campaign for
fair courts going. We must keep pushing to confirm judges who support
equal justice for all, establish a binding code of ethics for the Supreme
Court, and end the Far Right’s obstruction of well-qualified judicial
nominees.
Big wins don’t happen overnight. [ [link removed] ]That’s why we’re asking you to make a
gift to continue powering this critical work. Progress depends on support
from grassroots champions for justice just like you. >>
We’re so grateful to have you in our movement. We’ll be in touch with
additional updates as the Supreme Court wraps up its term.
