Dear John,

ICYMI we published an Ahead of Print article yesterday from CMS on the National Health Expenditure Projections from 2022-31.

CMS's AHC Model
In their June article in Health Affairs, Jeanette Renaud and coauthors explore the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation’s Accountable Health Communities (AHC) Model.

Launched in 2017, the purpose of the AHC Model is to "test the impact of identifying and addressing Medicare and Medicaid beneficiaries’ health-related social needs on health care use and costs."

Renaud and coauthors administered a survey to AHC Model beneficiaries eligible for navigation services that connect community service providers with social services and assessed whether beneficiaries’ health-related social needs were resolved through the program’s navigation services.

Ultimately, while the AHC Model effectively engaged participants, with more than 75 percent of navigation-eligible beneficiaries opting to receive navigation, the authors find that "the assistance-track intervention did not significantly increase the rate of community service provider connection or the rate of health-related social needs resolution…"

These results suggest that AHC navigators need increased resources and capacity to address beneficiaries’ needs.

This article is one of two June articles on Accountable Health Communities.

During June, we're highlighting influential voices and organizations who have made an impact on LGBTQ+ health equity and policy.

The National Coalition for LGBTQ Health is committed to improving the health and well-being of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender individuals through federal and local advocacy, education, and research.

Each March, the Coalition hosts the annual National LGBTQ+ Health Awareness Week to encourage everyone to speak openly about all aspects of LGBTQ+ health.

According to Scott Bertani, Director of Advocacy at the Coalition, they provide a safe place to discuss community "needs and struggles while raising awareness about systemic discrimination." The Coalition is a 15+ year initiative of HealthHIV, a national nonprofit focused on health equity."
