Dear John,

The voter ID situation in North Carolina changed dramatically in April when the state’s Supreme Court issued a ruling reinstating a 2018 law requiring photo ID to vote. 

This ruling will impact all eligible North Carolina voters — from long-time residents who have cast their ballots for decades and never had to show an ID, to new voters for whom registering to vote is just the first step, as they will now have to also get an approved ID to vote. 

All of this is happening just a few months before municipal elections this fall. 

To cut through the confusion of this law, I sat down with VoteRiders’ National Voter ID Assistance Director & North Carolina Voter ID Coalition Coordinator Pam Pearson. She walked me through who is impacted, what steps they’ll need to take to make sure they can cast a ballot, and all the ways VoteRiders is helping voters navigate these changes. 

Some highlights from our discussion:

• The photo ID requirement will apply to all elections going forward, beginning with municipal elections this fall. However, the list of college and university IDs and state and local government employee IDs that will be accepted has not been released yet, making it even more confusing for people to know if they need to get a new ID now. 
• VoteRiders is reaching out to new voters who will need to be informed that registering to vote is only the first step — confirming that they have an acceptable photo ID will be critical to their ability to vote. 
• VoteRiders is also working with longtime voters who have never had to show an ID to vote before, to be sure they know what they need to bring with them to the polls. 

There is likely more to come out of North Carolina before the 2024 elections. VoteRiders is monitoring the situation closely to ensure we are always giving people the most accurate and useful information they need to cast a ballot with confidence.
