A SUMMER OF ACTION FOR A WILD WEST SU
Alaska's iconic West Su region is vast and roadless. But it might not be for much longer. This summer, our Defend the West Su coalition is reaching out to thousands of Alaskans and others to help stop a state-sponsored industrial road from piercing the heart of this wild place . If built, this road would cost Alaskans at least $450 million, cutting through 182 waterways and at least 83 free-flowing salmon streams in the process—all to give a handful of mining companies a free road to (maybe) break ground on their speculative claims. Read on for how—and why—we're getting the word out this summer.

STUDY SUGGESTS THAT SMOLTS MAY NTO FACTOR IN MARINE CONDITIONS WHEN HEADING TO SEA
How do Pacific salmon smolts choose when to start their first great ocean journey ? A new study suggests that changing ocean conditions might not be on their radar. The study, published in Nature Ecology & Evolution and led by Simon Fraser University scientists (Wild Salmon Center Science Director Dr. Matt Sloat is a co-author), brings together 20+ years of run timing data for 66 distinct salmon populations from Oregon to Alaska. It's the largest dataset on juvenile salmon migration timing yet compiled, setting the stage for more research on the potentially growing mismatch between when juvenile salmon head to sea, and when the sea will best serve their needs.
