John,
The Republican Study Committee, which counts 70% of House Republicans as members, just released its 2024 budget proposal―and it’s a disaster for Social Security and Medicare.
If enacted, this budget would:
-
Raise the retirement age to 69
-
End Medicare’s coverage guarantee, replacing it with a coupon
-
Force disabled Americans to wait twice as long to qualify for Medicare
-
Not ask for a single penny of additional taxes from the rich
This budget is the opening salvo in the latest Republican attack on Social Security. They know that these cuts are politically toxic. The Republican dream is for Democrats to agree to benefit cuts behind closed doors, then emerge with a “bipartisan” plan that the American people hate. Voters will be furious, but they won’t know who to blame.
Social Security Works is going to stop this plan in its tracks. We will make sure that McCarthy’s proposed commission never meets. Donate $7 today!
This plan from McCarthy and the RSC fearmongers about Social Security’s modest shortfall (still a decade away), but asks the people who would be most harmed by that shortfall to accept cuts now rather than requiring billionaires to pay even a penny more. Their plan to avoid possible benefit cuts in a decade is to lock cuts in immediately.
When the wealthy pay their fair share, we cannot only afford to maintain Social Security, we can EXPAND its benefits. That’s what the American people want―and it’s what we’re going to make sure that they get.
We’re launching a campaign in the halls of Congress and out in the streets to put pressure on lawmakers who back plans to cut Social Security. Can you donate $7 today?
Thank you,
Michael Phelan Social Security Works
