You’re invited to Freedom of the Press Foundation’s (FPF) next membership event, “Digital Security Education for Journalism Schools,” on Thursday, June 22, at 3 p.m. EDT.

Professor Paromita Pain joins FPF’s Principal Researcher Martin Shelton to explore the ideas and design behind the coursework and resources being taught in contemporary journalism school. Professor Pain addresses student responses to cybersecurity education; the modules; questions and concerns; and coursework feedback.

Professor Paromita Pain is an assistant professor of global media studies and Cybersecurity Center affiliate faculty at University of Nevada, Reno.

Her research focuses on alternate media and global journalism practices from feminist perspectives. She came into the area of cybersecurity and journalism education by accident when a UNR colleague, Professor Gi Woong Yun, introduced her to the field. Professor Pain is hoping to take lessons from cybersecurity instruction to high-conflict areas like Kashmir, the scene of a long and bloody border dispute, and to encourage journalism training institutes to take on cybersecurity education.

While journalists come from many professional backgrounds, one place we can most reliably address this need for digital security education systemically is within journalism schools, where students are already learning many of the skills they will need in a contemporary newsroom. We know many programs feel underprepared for education of this kind, so we built the U.S. Journalism School Digital Security Curriculum ([link removed]) to better support journalism schools' goals for digital security education.
