You know we have to clean up wasteful government spending.

Here’s step one: drag that waste out into the sunshine.

And you’ve got your own investigative reporter spotlighting government waste for the Canadian Taxpayers Federation.

His name is Ryan Thorpe and he’s been busy.

There are too many stories to list in one email, but here are a few that landed on the front page of the National Post:
* The governor general ([link removed]) got a $40,000 pay raise during the pandemic.
* The CTF went to court to make the government admit who stayed in a $6,000-per-night hotel room ([link removed]) . (UPDATE: we won, and you guessed it, it was the prime minister).
* The CBC paid out $16 million ([link removed]) in bonuses in 2022.
* Federal executives took $1.3 billion ([link removed]) in bonuses from 2015 to 2022.

And here’s one that didn’t make the front page (that’s probably good because there’s some adult content):
* A government initiative spent more than $12,000 ([link removed]) on shows where seniors tell their “spicy” stories.

It’s a good bet the government could have kept all of that waste secret if your investigative journalist hadn’t dragged it out into the sunlight.

But you deserve some good news too.

We exposed numerous stories about the Mission Cultural Fund because it wasted your money on things like shows with seniors telling “spicy” stories in other countries.

And then came this story buried on an insider online publication:
* Ottawa axes controversial cultural diplomacy “slush fund ([link removed]) ”

That’s right, your tax dollars aren’t getting wasted by the Mission Cultural Fund anymore because of your investigative journalist at the CTF. Even the Trudeau government couldn’t defend it any more. So, it cut the slush fund.

Politicians and bureaucrats want to hide wasteful spending in the dark. But sunshine is the best disinfectant and it worked to clean up the Mission Cultural Fund. And that’s why Ryan’s investigative journalism is so important.
