Compromise is a core component of democracy. ​​​​When elected officials work together to collaborate, negotiate, and accept mixed outcomes, the results may not make everyone happy. But participants who engage in the process can take satisfaction in knowing they made their case, advanced shared interests, and helped prevent grave errors. 

Unfortunately, rising levels of partisan polarization in the US have made compromise increasingly difficult to achieve.
