[email hero] Summer member drive deadline: Friday <[link removed]>

Hi Reader,

Our summer member drive ends tomorrow, and I’m so grateful for the response we’ve seen so far from our readers. I hope you’ll join them by making a donation of any amount <[link removed]> to support deep-dive journalism that holds the powerful to account by shining a light on corruption and injustice.

We shine that light with a purpose: Our mission is to use the moral force of investigative journalism to spur change. Our work has led to laws being passed, people resigning from powerful positions, victims receiving compensation and much more. We carefully track the impact of our work, and here are a few recent examples of stories that led to action:

*

Texas Legislature Closes Gun Background Check Loophole <[link removed]> State lawmakers passed a bill requiring courts to report involuntary mental health hospitalizations of juveniles for inclusion in the federal gun background check system. The law closes a gap revealed by ProPublica and The Texas Tribune in 2022.

*

Regulators Overhaul Inspections of Hospice Providers <[link removed]> A ProPublica story last year exposed fraud and exploitation within the $22 billion hospice industry. This year, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services announced reforms that went into effect immediately.

*

The IRS Tiptoes Into Offering Free Online Tax Filing — and Possible Competition With TurboTax <[link removed]> In the wake of ProPublica’s reporting on the misleading tactics of the major tax-prep companies, Congress asked the IRS to examine whether it could offer free filing directly with the tax agency. Now, a new pilot program will test the concept.

We’ll never stop shining a light on abuses of power and breaches of the public trust in an effort to hold people in power accountable. And thanks to donations from folks like you, we’re growing larger, getting stronger and are having more impact than ever before. Give today, and help ProPublica <[link removed]> ensure that we continue to have the resources to follow the most important stories wherever they lead — and for however long it takes.

Thanks so much, Jill Shepherd Fellow ProPublican <[link removed]>
