Like many Alaskan children, educators lifted my brothers and I up. They made us feel safe and ready to reach our potential. Coming from a home with much dysfunction, the adults in our school brought a sense of continuity and motivation inspiring us to work toward becoming our best selves.

Education saved and changed my life.

Education shouldn’t be a partisan issue, but too often, when politicians promise to cut spending, education is one of the first things on the chopping block. This is a short-sighted way to solve problems that have severe economic and moral repercussions. That’s why in 2014, I led Great Alaska Schools to resist budget cuts. The organization grew into a grassroots force of thousands across the state, forcing lawmakers to take our demands seriously.

I am running for office because I won’t stand by and watch our children and their education suffer due to partisanship and lack of leadership.

Education shaped my life and made me the person I am today. And I am grateful to say that I am the mother of four children who graduated from Alaskan public schools. Each of them will be contributors to our economy as workers and engaged citizens.

That is why I’m so excited that the National Education Association-Alaska endorsed our campaign for Congress. Together, we can support the children of Alaska and bring the change our state needs.
