The difference between those news outlets that survive and those that languish is the ability to diversify their sources of revenue. While almost every single news outlet still relies on advertising revenue, many have had to find other ways to bring in income. For example, the Washington Post relies on subscriptions and they are also propped up by billionaire Jeff Bezos, The Wall Street Journal has an impenetrable paywall, and the Guardian is sustained by an endowment and donations from its readers.

Fortunately, Daily Kos recognized the need to diversify our revenue over a decade ago. At that time, advertising revenue was no longer covering the bills for our growing news and activism organization. That’s when we turned to our readers and activists and asked for their support.

Today, Daily Kos relies on three sources of revenue: community fundraising, advertising, and list building, in which Democratic and progressive campaigns pay for the opportunity to make their case to our readers over email. Unfortunately, two of these sources of revenue are lagging behind projections so far this year.

The truth is, there is no single solution to our current financial situation. We have already made deep financial cuts and other changes in hopes of improving our revenue. Finally, after months of struggling, we are starting to see the impacts of those changes. We have also been relying more and more on grassroots donations from our readers and activists to pay the bills.

Daily Kos doesn't have a billionaire backer or part of some mega-corporate conglomerate. We don't have a paywall because we believe our content should be accessible to everyone. What we do have is you, Jack, and tens of thousands of Daily Kos readers and activists that donate a few dollars at a time to help us make ends meet.

And honestly; we prefer it this way because it makes us accountable to you—not to some billionaire or corporation with their own agenda. We know that in order to keep operating, we have to fight and deliver for what you believe in.
