Hot Meals on a Chilly Day.

ACEH outreach teams now have 4 pallets of self-heating meals to hand out at our weekly pop-up events. These meal packs include everything needed for our neighbors who are sleeping outside to have a warm nourishing meal. We know that ultimately our clients need shelter and housing, but in the meantime, they are extremely grateful for this basic comfort.
 

A huge thank you to Food Bank of Alaska for providing these hot meals, and to Beans Café warehouse for storing them.

Outreach teams will continue to host pop-up events weekly at Davis Park Tuesdays, 1-4 PM. There will be other Pop-ups at different locations around town week to week. For up-to-date times and locations, please contact [email protected]. Together with our partners, we will deliver food, aid, basic medical, and other services to connect people to housing.

Capital Campaign Kickoff and Juneteenth Celebration June

The Alaska Food Coalition Mini Grants for 2023 are open until next Friday, June 16th at 4:30 PM. The Food Coalition funds mini grants of up to $1,000 to coalition partners involved in fighting hunger. These funds are intended for small-scale, capacity-building projects that will have a long-term impact on addressing food insecurity in Alaska such as coolers, freezers, and shelving.

Capital Campaign Kickoff and Juneteenth Celebration June

Shiloh Community Housing, Inc. is a nonprofit organization that’s been operating in Alaska since 2002. Their mission is to remove barriers to safe, affordable housing such as age, income sustainability, underemployment, lack of education, and/or skills that would prevent a person from ever obtaining sustainability or permanent housing.

This Juneteenth SCHI is showcasing their efforts to disrupt the cycle of homelessness with their 1st Annual Juneteenth Celebration and Capital Campaign Kick-Off. Capital is being raised to remodel SCHI’s Community Resource Center. Show up and support!

Policing and the punitive politics of homelessness policy

New research shows how the police are highly influential in and frequently involved in implementing homelessness policymaking.

Our research partners at Cornell University and Boston University conducted a study on the involvement of the police in addressing homelessness in cities across the country.
They recently published a policy brief that compiles various data, including a novel survey of mayors and information about Homeless Outreach Teams in the 100 largest cities nationwide.

According to their findings:

• Cities’ police departments are highly influential in homelessness policy-making. 78% percent of mayors say that the police have at least some influence over their homelessness policies — more than people experiencing homelessness and public housing authorities.
• City staff dedicated to homelessness are commonly located in police departments. 22% percent of mayors housed their homelessness staff in police departments, the second most popular option after social services (38%).

Please be sure to complete any in-progress calculations and download the summary files of your existing calculations for your records before the IEC is updated on June 15, after the update the IEC will use the FY 2023 Income Limits for the purposes of determining eligibility.
