Friend --
This is not a test! This is not a
drill! We need you to join us
now and take action to
protect Senate Bill 2 and protect police accountability &
transparency in California! We only have until Thursday
at midnight to Protect Senate Bill 2!
Senate Bill 2 (Bradford, 2021) was
passed by our policymakers and signed into law by the Governor to
ensure police who are bad actors are held accountable when they break
the law, abuse their power, and act with misconduct. SB 2 created a
pathway to decertify officers who engage in serious misconduct and
commit crimes.
Unfortunately, a critical transparency piece of SB 2 is at
risk of being secretly canceled without the public’s
knowledge. We
can’t let this happen, click here to demand Governor Newsom protect
Senate Bill 2, uphold police transparency, and rebuild public
trust.
When activists, lawyers, law
enforcement, and lawmakers negotiated SB 2, a critical provision was
added stating all records introduced during
decertification proceedings “shall be public.” This means that POST, the law enforcement
agency responsible for conducting decertification proceedings, must
respond to public records requests. And who, besides corrupt cops,
would object to disclosing records relating to police dishonesty,
abuse of power, physical abuse, sexual assault, and bias? Help
us demand transparency and accountability, click here to sign and send
a letter in a few minutes opposing the weakening of SB
2!
We need your help to protect a critical piece of the law
being unraveled behind closed doors. We must let Governor Newsom and our
policymakers know that we won’t accept secret dealings behind closed
doors that prevent the public from accessing information and records
about serious police misconduct, criminal acts, and abuse of power.
Police are not above the law, and the public deserves to know when
they break their oath to protect and serve and cause harm to our
communities. Will
you take action now and let Governor Newsom and California
representatives know you oppose the secret weakening of Senate Bill
2?
Together we can continue to drive a
vision that helps keep our communities safe and thriving.
