Thank you for standing with me throughout this challenging impeachment process.
I pushed so hard for impeachment – before most Democrats were on board – because the rule of law and our democracy are too important to let President Trump get away with being an unaccountable tyrant.
The outcome of the trial is about what I expected from Republicans, and now the American people can see exactly who they are before making a critical decision in November.
Republicans have spent the duration of the Trump administration covering for abuse of power and foreign interference in our democracy in increasingly desperate attempts to shield the president from accountability. Their behavior is the very definition of placing partisanship over the national security interests of the United States.
Even with President Trump openly claiming that he is not accountable to the law, they refused to show any backbone.
Mr. President, let me be very clear: We didn’t fight the Revolutionary War to allow you to disrespect our Constitution and declare yourself king a few hundred years later.
You said I’ve been fighting you for 25 years, and I’m not going to stop now.
American democracy will overcome your tyranny, and your judgment day will come in November.
