A dark day for Nottingham

Nottingham Together banner

Yesterday was a dark day for our city. It is difficult to fathom that these terrible attacks happened in our city, in streets familiar to us all, where we are used to going about our daily business. It will take some time for all of us to come to terms with it, but of course our thoughts and prayers are especially with the family and friends of those who lost three loved ones yesterday those who have been injured, and to the communities where they lived.

It is devastating that through senseless violence, we have lost two young University of Nottingham students, Barnaby Webber and Grace Kumar and Ian Coates, a much-loved primary school caretaker at Huntingdon Academy. What their friends and family are going through is unimaginable.

Like everyone, I am shocked and saddened by these horrific deaths. Ours is an overwhelmingly peaceful and tolerant city where people get along with one another and it?s incomprehensible that such dreadful violence has happened here. I attended yesterday?s vigil at St Peter?s Church and was moved by the people who wanted to pay their respects.

They, like those who rushed to the aid of victims yesterday, show the true spirit of Nottingham. We are devasted, but we will come together as Nottingham always does, we will look out for one another and we will stand united against violence.

Nottingham Together vigil

Candle stock shot

We know the impact of these awful events will be felt not only by the victims? families and friends but by the wider Nottingham community and so it is important that we take time to join together to share our grief and to remember the people we have lost.

The city will come together at a vigil to be held in the Old Market Square on Thursday evening, 15 June from 5.30pm. The vigil will be a chance for people to come together to mourn and to show the world how Nottingham takes a stand against violence.

The flag on Nottingham?s Council House has been lowered to half-mast and a book of condolence opened as the city mourns the tragic loss of life following yesterday?s horrific incident.

People are also being invited to lay flowers on the steps of the Council House while the lights on the building will be lowered at night as a mark of respect.

At tomorrow?s vigil, I will join the Lord Mayor, Cllr Carole McCulloch and Shearer West, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Nottingham, and representatives from our faith communities who will lead a minute?s silence at 6pm from the steps of the Council House.

People are welcome to join from home by lighting a candle in their window or doorstep.

Nottingham?s spirit shines through

Vigil at St Peter's Church

I have been struck by the amazing people and organisations who have responded to yesterday?s events with the warmth and care that defines our great city. I am extremely grateful for the professional and swift response provided by our emergency services keeping us safe. The police quickly made an arrest and are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident.

Our community protection officers have been on patrol providing reassurance for people understandably concerned about yesterday?s events, while services like the tram, buses and bin collections have worked valiantly to get things back to normal for everyone. The faith communities have also responded, offering support and solace.

It has also been touching to receive the messages of support our city has received from near and far.
