Dear John,
I’m Vanessa, the Digital Director for Caring Across Generations. I wanted to share my personal experience with paid leave as a queer person that I think you’ll relate to. Here goes…
At a certain point in my life, I had to seek out “friend family” after being close to my biological family stopped making sense. This means my closest family aren’t blood related – but they’re the ones who accept me for me and we take care of each other through thick and thin.
Throughout my career, I’ve needed to take paid leave to care for my chosen family but haven’t been able to. I’m not alone. Too many people are unable to care for the people they love most because they aren’t directly related.
Will you join me in demanding Congress recognize chosen families as family – and give everyone the time they need to care for their loved ones by passing paid leave for all? Add your name now. [[link removed]]
As hateful attacks on queer people continue to rise across the country, finding and cultivating chosen families is vital for our survival. At Caring Across Generations, we’re working to ensure EVERY family – including chosen family – is recognized and given the support they need to care for one another.
Far too many people are forced to choose between being there for the people they love during times of crisis and showing up at the job that pays their bills.
We need to make sure we have paid leave policies that allow us to be there for the people we love – no matter who they are.
Sign on now to join our petition calling on our leaders to pass a paid leave for all policy that recognizes chosen families. [[link removed]]
Pride Month is about creating a culture where LGBTQ+ communities can live with joy and dignity, give and receive care, and thrive. Join me in building a more caring and inclusive system for all of us.
With care,
Vanessa Butterworth, Senior Digital Director
