Just a few weeks ago, The New Yorker came out with a piece outlining how intertwined the fight for abortion access and the fight to protect direct democracy have become. While we’re thrilled that the mainstream media is picking up on what we’ve been saying for years, these attacks are nothing new. 

The same out-of-touch extremists who are in the news for these attacks now, are the very same ones who have tried to stop Medicaid expansion, keep us from raising minimum wages, enacting protections for workers, and so many more common-sense policies.

What’s different about right now though, friend, is that the overwhelming majority of Americans want to see abortion access remain protected — and these extremists know it. 

They’ve seen in Michigan, Vermont, and our other campaign states that when the issue is put in front of voters, time and again voters will choose to preserve access to abortion. So, they’re scared. They are so scared that they are willing to do anything and everything they can to make sure abortion protections are never put to a vote. So more than ever before, we’re seeing these same extremist officials try and find ways to make it impossible for voters to use ballot measures to protect their reproductive freedom. 

We’re seeing it right now in Ohio, and very soon — more states across the country. But our team at the Fairness Project is committed to fighting back, and we believe that voters will make the right decision and preserve the power they have via direct democracy. It’s like I told The New Yorker: We will make sure that the voters of Ohio understand the implications, not just for the abortion issue that is coming in November but all of the other issues that Ohio voters will want to vote on in the future.
