scientists last year who pledged to take sweeping action on gun violence
if elected.
Here’s what you need to know about an Assault Weapons Ban:
The previous Federal Assault Weapons ban lasted from 1994-2004 until
Republicans allowed it to expire (at the urging of the NRA). During that
time, a Congressional study found the homicide rate in the United States
dropped by 7% and that mass shooting fatalities were less likely to occur
by a staggering 70%.

During that time, the usage of assault weapons in violent crimes involving
guns dropped by nearly 20%. The data is clear: An assault weapons ban will
save lives and make mass shooting events less fatal.
Records from the Department of Defense about the AR-15 and assault weapons
noted their efficiency in killing (as compared to wounding) and that
specifically, the ability to fire multiple large rounds in less than a
second (including the significantly larger exit wounds created by assault
rounds) designated them as weapons of war designed to inflict mass
fatalities and pierce armor vs. other forms of firearms.
