Talking points on abortion
******

Dear supporter,

People are talking about the jailing of a woman who lied to get drugs for an abortion at around 33 weeks.


Here are a few points you could mention:

* The time limit for abortion is 12 weeks in Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Italy, and Greece. It’s 14 weeks in France and Spain.
* The most common principle cited in the UK is that the time limit should be set at ‘viability’, i.e. when babies are expected to survive outside the womb.
* Once this was set at 28 weeks. Thirty years ago, due to medical advances it was lowered to 24 weeks. But there’s no limit where a child is deemed to have a disability.
* Today, many babies born before 24 weeks survive.
* A baby born at the age of the child in this case would almost certainly survive. Many mothers have told of how their children, born at 33 weeks or younger, are now healthy adults.


We believe in the sanctity of life from conception ([link removed]) . But even secular journalists like Allison Pearson ([link removed]) and Sarah Vine ([link removed]) have backed the judge and oppose those who want to legalise abortion up to birth.
