John, I’m not sure how to write this email to you today. A 19-year-old died while at the movies Monday night in Kent, WA. Then, yesterday, a pregnant woman and her unborn child died in Seattle’s Belltown neighborhood.

I’ve written many an emergency email, but something about the closeness of these tragedies is hard to shake. I don’t know if you’ve ever gone somewhere that became the scene of the latest tragedy, but I have. It’s terrifying. Just a few years ago I was driving down the highway when my driver-side window was shattered after two bullets hit the glass. Just like the soon-to-be mother, we lost yesterday.

I know you don’t live in Washington. But I know that your city or town or neighborhood might be experiencing the same increase in gun violence.

And I am not trying to scare you. But this epidemic is terrifying. Gun violence is growing and despite the many who claim that there’s nothing we can do, I’m here to tell you that isn’t the case.
