The City of Madison Fleet is responsible for the purchase and maintenance of 1,400 vehicles including police cars, fire trucks, ambulances, collection trucks, dump trucks, and snow plows. Madison is embarking on a fleet transformation towards green technology, implementing electric vehicles, gas-electric hybrids, biodiesel, anti-idle technology, and more. Mahanth joined City of Madison as Fleet Superintendent in 2017 after 16 years of working in New York City government operations. Mahanth worked for NYC Parks & Recreation managing vehicle repair, recycling, waste collection and volunteer programs, amongst other tasks. In 2012 he began overseeing the safety program for all City departments using the 30,000-vehicle fleet, and helped manage preparations and response to Hurricane Sandy, which struck the East Coast the same year.

In Madison, he is focused on making the City fleet the greenest, safest, and most cost efficient possible in coordination with his colleagues in every department. Mahanth has also never owned a personal vehicle and gets around by bus or bike.
