MARCH ON is dedicated to increasing voter turnout and driving Democrats to the polls. Our data-driven solutions led the way for progressive victories in 2020 and 2022. Now, we're gearing up to stop Trump’s comeback in 2024.

Dear Friend,

Happy Pride Month! This week, we’re highlighting Rep. Mauree Turner of Oklahoma.

Turner won their election to the Oklahoma House of Representatives in 2020. Upon their victory, Rep. Turner became the first publicly non-binary state lawmaker in the United States, as well as the first Muslim to represent Oklahoma in the state legislature.

In the Oklahoma House, Turner has been a vocal opponent of the 45+ anti-LGBTQ+ bills introduced by Republicans this year alone – including a disproportionate number of bills targeting transgender youth.

Unfortunately, Rep. Turner has faced censorship from Oklahoma Republicans, who hold a supermajority in the House. After protesters gathered to oppose a Republican-led ban on gender-affirming care for transgender children, Turner opened their office to console a protester whose spouse had just been arrested. Republicans moved to censure Turner on allegations of “harboring a fugitive” – and since March 7th, Turner has been removed from their committee assignments.

Rep. Turner’s censure will continue until the start of a new legislative session in January 2025 – but that hasn’t stopped them from continuing to vote and advocate against harmful anti-LGBTQ+ legislation.

This Pride Month, we’re inspired by Mauree Turner’s tenacity and strength!

That’s why we’re calling on you to join us in demanding the Senate pass the Equality Act this June.

In the wake of anti-trans legislation, bans on drag performances, and censorship of books featuring LGBTQ+ characters, the Equality Act would overturn state-level attacks on our rights and protect our communities from future acts of discrimination.

Thank you for taking action with us!
