Much has been made about the experience required to set the direction of our city - let’s look at the results.

Customer Focused Government

Leading companies through periods of rapid growth, I’ve come to rely on the laser focus required to hold an organization accountable to results. As an owner-manager of WorldStrides, the country’s largest student travel organization, I led expansion of the company to more than 50 international markets - tripling the size in a few short years.

How did we do that?

Well, first we didn’t go to the government for a hand-out. Most business owners cringe when someone with “government experience” says they “created jobs” - I know I do.

Our role in city government is to build a thriving environment - so that all kids can be prepared to compete for the maximum wage jobs coming to the city, so driving to work doesn’t create a pothole-induced flat tire, and when you call 911 an officer is able to respond.

For my business, success came when we relentlessly focused on the critical few drivers of our success - customer focus, a quality experience, and fair prices.

So how does that experience translate to leading Nashville at this moment? It takes courage to lead an organization to stop doing things that aren’t serving it well and to focus - relentlessly - on outcomes instead of activities.

A customer focused government will begin to measure our success by:
1. Our school literacy and graduation rates
2. Our countywide police and emergency response times & staffing
3. Our city services - including road quality, trash pick up, permitting timelines, park maintenance, sidewalk miles, and sewer, water and electrical capacity
4. Our crime clearance rates and reducing repeat offenders’ ability to create more victims
5. Our ability to live within our considerable means - and to not raise taxes on Nashville families.

To be sure there are a great number of things a city could do - but when we take our eye off the critical few, we go into a daze of distraction and we don’t hold ourselves accountable to what matters most to the majority of our residents.

If we keep electing the same people we’ve elected for the last 20 years, we cannot expect a different result. This election provides our citizens the chance to send a message to City Hall - that simply defending the status quo of the downtown developers’ crowd is no longer acceptable to our citizens. We can reject the recipe book that has led to the ruin of once-great cities.

We can boldly chart a new direction that believes that Nashville can and must hit a hard reset to bring accountability to our schools, support public safety, and responsibly manage the city’s finances. It takes a different kind of leader - an entrepreneur with experience at the state executive and federal legislative levels - with the courage to step forward and bring accountability and results.
