Photo credit: AJC John, Today marks a major moment in our fight to end gun violence. I’m leading an effort with other House Democrats to gather signatures for discharge petitions that would force a vote in the House on three different gun control bills. John, this doesn’t happen often. We’re working on these discharge petitions because our nation is in crisis. I’ve pushed for gun safety reform since my son Jordan was shot and killed in 2012. Our policies on guns failed my son and the many, many others that become victims of shootings every year – and we’re on pace for a record number of mass shootings in 2023. John, I’ve had enough. My GOP colleagues have blocked all of our attempts to enact common-sense laws that would curb the epidemic of gun violence, so it’s time to force their hand. Will you join this effort by adding your name as a citizen co-sponsor to my petition? The discharge petitions we’re introducing would ban AR-15 style firearms, expand background checks, and would close the Charleston loophole. These measures will save lives and make our communities safer.
Though we hear the news about shooting after shooting, these senseless acts of gun violence seem to fall on deaf ears for my colleagues on the other side of the aisle. Their thoughts and prayers are meaningless without substantive action.
By forcing this legislation to a vote, we’re hoping that enough Republicans will recognize that urgent action is needed to stop the carnage. Will you add your name to our petition to make yourself a citizen co-sponsor of our legislation for gun safety reform?
