Most nurses responding to a March–April 2022 survey on racism said yes, they saw or experienced incidents of discrimination at the workplace, but only 1 in 4 said they reported it. That’s among findings in the newly released survey of 980 nurses from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the National Opinion Research Center at the University of Chicago, which measured perceptions of racism from both patients and colleagues

National Nurses Month “should be more than flowers, candy, signs, and discounts.” In a Pennsylvania Capital-Star column, Antonia M. Villarruel, PhD, RN, of the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing, and Kevin B. Mahoney, MBA, University of Pennsylvania Health System CEO, declare: “Policymakers, leadership of health care systems, nursing schools and other health-related organizations, and the public all have roles to play” in truly recognizing nurses. Villarruel is the chair of the Campaign’s Strategic Advisory Committee.

As moderator James Ballinghoff, DNP, MBA, RN, of Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, says at the start, “Challenges open up opportunities to create solutions,” and participants discuss those ideas as well.
The Tennessee Rising Star Nurse Leader program recognizes this year’s up-and-coming nurses leaders who have already proved their mettle. The 25 honorees were selected by leaders from the Tennessee Action Coalition, Tennessee Nurses Association, and Tennessee Hospital Association. The program seeks to empower nurses from across the state to lead the profession in improving the health of Tennesseans.
Congratulations to Minnesota Action Coalition’s Pipeline for American Indian/Alaska Natives Youth in Nursing and Other Health Professions: The effort has earned a Building Healthier Communities award from Stratis Health. The Action Coalition’s mission is to create an Indigenous-led coalition to support greater health equity in Minnesota; grant funds will seed a website and database that will lay the groundwork to mentor AI/AN youth in middle schools to explore career paths in nursing and other health professions.

The Chronicle of Higher Education provides a DEI Legislation Tracker to show which states have proposed or passed legislation affecting diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts. In a statement, the American Association of Colleges of Nursing links to the tracker and encourages “member schools to be highly informed of not only the legislation, but on strategies to address proposed or passed legislation.”

The ANA Innovation Awards highlight, recognize, and celebrate nurse-led innovation that improves patient safety outcomes. The awards offer $25,000 for an individual nurse and $50,000 for a nurse-led team. Research, educational interventions, care delivery models and new business or service are among the many categories. Deadline: November 3.
The Camden Coalition invites all to spread word of their work in the field of complex care at the November 1-3 Putting Care at the Center 2023 conference. Lead a workshop, or present a poster or table at the Beehive, the place for emerging knowledge, experience, and strategy. Deadline remains June 15.
The Root Cause Coalition calls for nominations for its 2023 Health Justice Award, which honors organizations that have successfully implemented a program to reduce health—matching the coalition’s mission of collaborating across sectors to improve and achieve health equity. Winners will receive $25,000 and be recognized during the coalition’s December 3–5 national summit. Deadline: June 19.
Learn about the state of diversity, equity, and inclusion in academic nursing and the role of diversity officers in nursing education and practice at American Association of Colleges of Nursing’s 2024 Diversity Leadership Institute. The five-month program offers the opportunity for participants “to develop a diversity plan designed to drive excellence and meet local needs.” Deadline: June 30.
