Dear reader,

After years of debate over how students learn to read, math is having a moment. And there is no shortage of opinion on what kind of math should be taught when, and who is being left out. Nearly 500 Hechinger Report readers responded to a survey we sent out asking what concerns people about math education (it’s not too late: we are still collecting ideas). Their thoughtful feedback ranged widely, from how to boost lagging performance and close racial achievement gaps to thoughts about math anxiety to ideas on helping students catch up after the pandemic.

I hope you will read my column and our analysis of the responses, and get in touch with your own views. We’d especially love to hear from parents as we continue reporting on these issues.

Also this week, Proof Points columnist Jill Barshay digs deeply into research on the performance of charter schools, with some promising news but also many caveats about these publicly-financed but privately-run schools. We also bring you a reality check about teaching, our look at how schools are using artificial intelligence in the classroom and a passionate plea for more early childhood education funding in the U.S.
