The Congressional Oversight Committee recently had a hearing on ESG, one
of Republicans’ hot topics of the year.

ESG stands for environment, social, and governance. It’s a measure used by
investors that takes into account things like a company’s climate change
strategy and workplace safety practices.

Americans value freedom and choice. Banning ESG is just a way for
Republicans to shield their corporate friends from being held accountable
by consumers.

Banning ESG is akin to this:

Let’s say I’m finally ready to trade in my minivan. I want something
that’s more fuel efficient, and I want a new color (I’m told country blue
isn’t cool anymore). But there are these new rules that *won’t allow me*
to see vital information about the cars available. I can see the cost, and
I can see the expected depreciation. But I’m not allowed to see the make
or model. I can’t see if it’s a gas guzzler. I can’t find out if it was
union-made in the U.S.

Whether these things matter to you is up to you. That's a principle of our
capitalist economy.

It sounds ridiculous when you compare it to cars, but that’s what
Republicans are trying to do here.

Congress has plenty of issues we need to tackle: gun violence, inflation,
housing affordability…the list goes on. I hope the Republicans who lead
our committee agendas will turn their attention to these real issues.

Onward,

Katie Porter
