Dear John,
Last Friday, Donald Trump was indicted on 37 counts of willful retention of national defense information charges, conspiracy to obstruct justice, corruptly concealing a document or record, and other assorted crimes.
Yet despite his multiplying indictments, we must face the reality that Donald Trump is well on his way to once again winning the Republican nomination for president — and given the deadly lengths Trump has already gone to gain power, I truly fear for the future of our democracy.
But there is good news: The framers of the 14th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution put protections in place for exactly this scenario and explicitly banned anyone who has engaged in insurrection from ever holding public office.
Let me repeat that: Because of the January 6 insurrection, Donald Trump is constitutionally disqualified from serving as president. He shouldn’t even be allowed on the ballot.
However, it’s up to state election officials to keep Trump off the ballot, and they will be under enormous political pressure to ignore the 14th Amendment. That’s why Inequality Media Civic Action has launched a campaign to spread the truth and urge secretaries of state to uphold their constitutional duty and disqualify Trump from running for president.

Adopted after the Civil War, the 14th Amendment explicitly prohibits elected officials who’ve engaged in insurrection from serving in public office again, and it’s been applied many times in the past. In fact, just last year, a New Mexico judge removed a county commissioner who participated in the January 6 insurrection from his office and banned him from running again in the future.
If we believe in the rule of law, then the same prohibitions must apply to Donald Trump.
The problem is that the corporate media isn’t telling that story, which will make it extremely difficult politically for state election officials to enforce the 14th Amendment and keep Trump off the ballot. That’s why Inequality Media Civic Action is using our proven-effective video explainers and other social media content to explain to the public why Trump should be disqualified.
We saw on January 6, 2021, the deadly lengths that Trump is willing to go to in his pursuit of power, and his 2024 campaign is already more dangerously unhinged than his previous two campaigns. We can’t just sit back and let him set our democracy on fire again. But with filing deadlines for 2024 presidential candidates approaching in the next six months, we don’t have much time. Will you make a donation to help support this vital effort?
Yes, I’ll make a donation to educate the public and call on election officials to apply the 14th Amendment and keep Donald Trump off the 2024 presidential ballot.
Thanks for joining with us in the fight for democracy,
Robert Reich
