CREW has been saying *for years* that Mar-a-Lago posed a national security risk. Last February, we even requested that the Department of Justice investigate whether Donald Trump violated criminal laws by destroying presidential records and removing records to Mar-a-Lago at the end of his presidency. And this past week, he was finally indicted on 37 felony counts related to classified documents and obstruction of justice.

That’s even more than we expected — and to make matters worse for Trump, the case against him is both strong and straightforward.

John, in just a moment, we’ll break it all down. But first, I want to remind you:

The work to hold Trump accountable for all his corruption is not over. And strong as it is, winning this case may not be easy.

CREW is working to hold Trump accountable each and every day. Please support our work with a donation → [[link removed]]If you've saved your payment information with ActBlue Express, your donation will go through immediately:

Trump’s latest indictment is consistent with what we expected, but the details show that Donald Trump's alleged conduct is even worse than we knew.

The national security importance of the documents at issue is striking: documents about American and foreign nuclear capabilities and military vulnerabilities, as well as plans for possible military action. The possible damage if this information was compromised is far from trivial.

Yet Trump allegedly showed highly classified documents to and discussed them with civilians with no security clearance:

This is clearly not how classified information works. But Trump didn’t care.

He was keeping classified documents — including some about US military contingency planning, and nuclear and military capabilities of other countries — near the Mar-a-Lago pool and liquor supply cabinet.

It also makes clear that boxes with highly classified documents were left around in public and unsecured places around Mar-a-Lago in one instance with contents of a box, including a highly classified document, spilled on the floor and visible.

The indictment goes into detail on steps that Trump took to conceal the documents and to obstruct the FBI and grand jury investigations. He suggested that his attorney hide or destroy documents and directed Walt Nauta to move boxes "to conceal them" from Trump’s attorneys and the FBI.

Donald Trump compromised the security of the United States and put his own interests ahead of keeping Americans safe. He has been charged with several serious federal crimes including obstruction of justice.

This is a monumental step toward accountability for his crimes, and it is a win for our democracy. But it’s not the end of our fight.
